The red light district or 'schipperskwartier'

=

The red light district is located in wat locals call ‘het Schipperskwartier’, a name of course referring to the presence of sailors, who visited the area to dance, have a drink and look for some ‘company’.
In the past, when the sea-going ships still moored at the quays in the city, the sailors found their 'girls of pleasure' here.
Until a few years ago, prostitution was mainly situated around the 'Coninxplein', where the 'Permeke library' is now located.
In the streets around the Atheneum, the ladies, often heroin addicts, went for a walk.
The city of Antwerp has meanwhile organized and allowed prostitution in the Schipperskwartier.
There are 3 streets with window prostitution, with a police office centrally located.
This prostitution neighborhood is considered by women to be the safest and most pleasant place to work in Europe.
The majority of women work for their own account, without a pimp. They rent a window per day or week.
Regular medical check-ups are mandatory.
The organization 'Payoke' helps and supports the women if necessary.
